KARACHI, March 6: Former minister for foreign affairs Makhdoom Shah Mehmood Qureshi can become the prime minister of the country in future, said Pakistan Muslim League-Functional chief Pir Pagara on Sunday afternoon.

“When one Makhdoom [Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani] could become the prime minister, the other Makhdoom can also become the chief executive of Pakistan,” he told the media following his meeting with Mr Qureshi at the Kingri House.

The meeting was described as a non-political courtesy call by Mr Qureshi, who shares ancestral roots with Pir Pagara, thespiritual leader of Hur Movement.

Responding to questions from the media, the PML-F chief said the warm welcome recently accorded to Mr Qureshi in Tharparker was not because of his affiliation with the Pakistan People’s Party as claimed by Dr Zulfiqar Mirza; rather because of Mr Qureshi’s spiritual seat as there live thousands of his followers.

In reply to a query about JUI-F chief’s efforts to unite political and religious forces on one platform like the PNA to launch an anti-government drive, Pagara said no political leader would be part of this campaign, while “Mullas” role would be insignificant.

He said those who would usher a revolution were not staying abroad but living in the country.

When Mr Qureshi was questioned about the banners put up at different spots advising him to learn a lesson from the mistakes of Farooq Leghari, Pir Pagara intervened asking what wrong Mr Leghari had committed.

Mr Qureshi, who recently resigned from his office over differences on Raymond Davis, said he was not unmindful to the history. He said he had uttered nothing against the interest of his party, adding that those indulging in such politicking were damaging the party.

His visit to Sindh was not political, he said, adding that he believed in party discipline.
