Bridge, school blown up in Khyber

LANDI KOTAL, March 14: Militants targeted a bridge, a school and convoy of security forces in different areas of Khyber tribal region on Monday.

Officials said that unidentified armed men planted huge quantity of explosives at a government primary school at Cheengai in Landi Kotal tehsil on the night between Sunday and Monday.

The explosives went off at midnight and completely destroyed the two-room school. The incident is third of its kind in less than one week period.

Militants have so far destroyed 35 educational institutions in different parts of Khyber Agency during the last one-and-a-half year since a military operation was launched in the region.

A bridge was also blown up in Akkakhel locality of Bara tehsil. Militants had destroyed two bridges in the same locality and another in Mandi Kas area on Friday, causing problems for security forces to patrol the areas infested with outlaws and militants.In Landi Kotal, two FC personnel received minor injuries when their vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb.

The explosion also caused damage to the vehicle and a taxicab besides suspending traffic on the main Peshawar-Torkham Road for at least two hours.

Eyewitness said that target of the time device was an oil tanker but the device was dropped from the tanker and went off when the army vehicle and taxicab were passing through the area.

Security forces also resorted to indiscriminate firing in the air after the incident to preempt any possible attack by militants from the nearby hilltops.
