Judge flings paperweight at lawyer

SHEIKHUPURA, March 22: The legal fraternity went into protest mode soon after a civil judge hit paperweight on the head of a lawyer during the course of arguments and the court staffers manhandled two other lawyers on Tuesday.

Reports said Advocate Ali Naqvi appeared before Civil Judge Ahmad Saeed Sheikh in a civil suit and went rude during arguments. The judge lost his cool and threw paperweight at the lawyer who suffered injury on his head.

As Advocate Tanvir Shah and another lawyer tried to rescue their colleague, the judge ordered his staffers to handle the lawyers. The court staff manhandled the lawyers and escorted the judge out of harm's way.

The injured lawyers were taken to the District Headquarters Hospital for treatment. They also obtained a medico-legal certificate to get a case registered against the judge.

A number of lawyers in Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Ferozewala and Sangla Hill boycotted the court proceedings and held protest meetings in the bar-rooms. In a unanimous resolution, they demanded that the higher judiciary sack the judge.

On the other hand, the judges also abandoned the court proceedings and gathered in the chamber of the district and sessions judge to draw up future strategy.
