Blasphemy suspect arrested in Gilgit

GILGIT, March 26: City police on Saturday arrested a young man who is accused of uttering derogatory words against the Holy Prophet (PBUH), police said.

City police station officials told Dawn that Abdur Rauf lodged a complaint with police that a young man Yaqoob had allegedly used abusive language against the Holy Prophet (PBUH). The police arrested the man and charged him under sections 295, 296, 298, 500 and 506 of the Pakistan Criminal Code. Police said the investigation was underway.

Earlier, following an announcement from a mosque near the police station people came out of their houses and blocked the area road in protest against the alleged blasphemer. However, when police arrested the accused protesters dispersed peacefully. SPORTS WEEK:

The womenfolk are being given special attention by the present government in order to bring them at par with men so that they could play a healthy role in socio-economic uplift of the society. This was stated by Yasmin Nazar, parliamentary secretary on works, planning and development, while addressing the inaugural function of women sports week that began at Government Degree College for Women Gilgit.

Ms Nazar said the women of Gilgit-Baltistan were endowed with talent and were capable of clinching honour. She mentioned two sisters who won gold medals in international events and said the government would promote sports among women.

Earlier, director colleges Mir Aman appreciated the preparations for the sports week and said a healthy student could become a healthy citizen and that extra-curricular activities were must for a successful career. The students presented games and march past.

The principal of the college, Uzma Haroon, thanked the chief guest and apprised her of a number of issues and requested her to resolve these. CIVIL COURT:

The government will construct building of civil court in Tangir valley of Chilas. An administration official told Dawn during visit of Chief Secretary Saifullah Chatta to the Tangir people demanded of him to announce a building for civil court as the civil judge appointed for the area was based in Chilas due to unavailability of accommodation for office and residence.
