Sabih, Anis triumph in Srs tennis

KARACHI, April 1: Sabih Wali and Anis-ur-Rehman opened their campaign in 55 plus singles on winning note when they beat their respective opponents in three gruelling sets apiece in the Seniors world ranking tennis championship at Karachi Gymkhana courts on Thursday evening.

The event was resumed after a day's break that occurred due to cricket World Cup semi-final between Pakistan and India across the border in Mohali.

Sabih, the tennis secretary of Karachi Gymkhana, who is instrumental in bringing the sponsorship for the event, was extended to limits before turning the tables on Zafrul Hassan 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.On the other hand, Anis recovered from a set down to trounce Akber Hayat Khan 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Results:55 plus singles:First round: Sabih Wali bt Zafrul Hassan 6-4, 4-6, 6-3; Anis-ur-Rehman bt Akbar Hayat Khan 2-6, 6-4, 6-4; Shahid Baig (Quetta) bt Ayub Haroon (walkover).

45 plus doubles: First round: Zafarul Hassan and Javed Iqbal bt Asfand Yar Minwala and Tariq Aziz 6-4, 6-2; Noorullah Dhanani (Hyderabad) and Qamruddin Habib (Hyderabad) bt Azharuddin and Sultan Mehmood (walkover).
