Parties’ likely share in seats for women, minorities

ISLAMABAD, Oct 15: The Pakistan Muslim League (Q) will earn 20 out of the 60 seats reserved for woman, and three out of the ten seats set aside for minorities, increasing its tally to 98, still 73 seats short of the simple majority in a house of 342.

From Punjab, which has a share of 35 out of the total 60 seats reserved for women in the national assembly, PML (Q) will bag 16 seats. If all the 22 independents joined the PML(Q) within three days of the announcement of final results, it is likely to get four more reserved seats.

If they do not join any political party, the independents would have no role in the election of woman and minorities on the reserved seats.

According to the list submitted by the PML(Q) to the Election Commission, the following women will become MNAs: Mehnaz Rafi, Dr Hajra Tariq Aziz, Tanzila Amir, Donya Aziz, Kashmala Tariq, Saira Tariq, Mrs Riffat Amjad, Dr Atiya Anayat Ullah, Bushra Rehman, Farzeen Ahmad, Shahzadi Umar Zadi Tiwana, Rahila Yahya, Aasia Azeem, Firdous Ashiq Awan, and Tehmina Dasti.

From the NWFP, the PML (Q) will get one seat, most probably going to Nizhat Islam (Kohat). From Sindh, the PML (Q) will also get one seat, and Rashida Pasha (Larkana) is set to grab it.

From Balochistan, the PML (Q) is likely to get one special seat, going to Nuzhar Iftikhar.

The PPP will get 15 reserved seats for woman from Punjab and Sindh, raising its tally to 77. The party is also expected to get 2 or 3 seats reserved for minorities.

From Punjab, the PPP will get 8 seats, to be filled in by Naheed Khan, Beelum Husnain, Begum Shakeela Rasheed, Fauzia Habib, Mehreen Raja, Yasmeen Rehman, Shehnaz Sheikh, and Rukhsana Bangash.

From Sindh, the PPP is set to bag 7 seats, going to Sherbano Sherry Rahman, Fauzia Wahab, Rukia Khanum, Nafeesa Munawwar Raja, Shagufta, Rashida Panwar, and Nuzhat Pathan.

The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal will possibly bag one seat from Punjab as its share is less than one seat but close to one. If one seat is allocated to MMA from Punjab, it will go to Saima Raheel Qazi.

The MMA will get 6 to 7 seats out of the total 8 seats reserved for the province.

From the list of woman candidates which it submitted to the EC, it appeared that MMA was not expecting the results which it got, as it had submitted the names of only five woman candidates against eight seats.

The burga-clad MNAs of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal will be Saeeda Adeeba Shirazi, Manshera; Jamila Ahmad, Swat; Razia Aziz, Peshawar; Inyat Begum, Peshawar; and Ume Kalsoom, Charsada.

The Muttahida, which captured 13 seats from urban Sindh, will have a share of at least three seats, going to Rehana Nasreen, Ishrat Sultana, and Najmus Sehar.

The National Alliance, led by Farooq Leghari, will have at least one and possibly two seats from Punjab where it won seven national assembly seats. The seats will go to Sumera Malik and Ayla Malik, the granddaughters of the late Nawab of Kalabagh Amir Mohammad Khan, and nieces of Sardar Farooq Ahmad Khan Leghari. If one Ms Malik is dropped, Mina Leghari will be the MNA of National Alliance. The NA will also have one seat from Sindh, possibly going to Gule Farkhanda.

The Pakistan Muslim League (N) will get at least three and possibly four seats from Punjab. It has nominated Maimona Javed Hashmi, daughter of incarcerated PML(N) leader, Makhdoom Javed Hashmi, Begum Ishrat Ashraf, Tehmina Daultana, and Rukhsana Safdar Rahman.
