Work on small dams underway for water storage

ISLAMABAD: The government has planned to construct thirty two dams in all the four provinces as part of its efforts to ensure adequate water availability for irrigation in years ahead.

Sources in the Ministry for Water and Power said the dams are being constructed in two phases. Work on twelve dams has already begun under the first phase and another twenty dams will be constructed in the second phase.

The dams will play a key role in ensuring the availability of water for irrigation and would help safe guard against flash-floods in monsoon. The twelve dams are expected to be complete by 2013 and remaining by 2016.
