Injured Nain to miss Colombo event

KARACHI, April 16: Pakistan women cricket team’s leading batswoman Nain Abidi will be missing the upcoming quadrangular series in Colombo due to injury.

Nain fractured her right hand during the camp held in preparation for the tournament at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore. She has been replaced by Sidra Amin.

“Nain is a player who gives her 100 per cent to the game. Who could have stopped her from diving after that ball during practice,” said team captain Sana Mir while speaking to Dawn on Saturday.

“This of course is a big blow for the team as coming out to bat at one down she is one of our best batswomen. The entire team depends on her batting,” she added.

About her replacement Sidra Amin, Sana informed: “Well, Sidra has been playing domestic cricket for some three years now. As part of the under-19 national team, she has played against Nepal when that team visited here recently. But this will be her first international tour.”

“Meanwhile, we may promote Bismah Maroof from two down to one down. We’ll have to work on our entire combination actually. Let’s see how it goes,” she added.

About the forthcoming event, she said: “It will be a tough tourney as all the four teams taking part, namely, Sri Lanka, Ireland and Holland are well-balanced sides. We have already beaten Holland in One-day Internationals and Ireland in Twenty20 in South Africa last year so Sri Lanka will be our toughest competition, no doubt, as they will also be playing in home conditions,” she said.

Meanwhile, team manager Ayesha Ashhar said that the losing Nain Abidi is unfortunate but the good news is that the injury is not very serious. “She has already started rehabilitation and is expected to be fit for our next assignment,” she said.

The Pakistan women’s team will be playing four ODIs (two with Sri Lanka and one each with Holland and Ireland) and three T20 matches (one with each team) during the series.

The team leaves for Colombo via Karachi on Monday.Squad:Sana Mir (captain), Javeria Wadood (vice-captain), Bismah Maroof, Nida Rasheed Dar, Asmavia Iqbal Khokhar, Sana Gulzar, Sidra Amin, Marina Iqbal, Masooma Junaid Farooqi, Kainat Imtiaz, Batool Fatima (wicket-keeper), Qanita Jalil, Sadia Yousuf, Nahida Bibi.Officials: Mansoor Rana (coach), Ayesha Ashhar (manager).
