ISLAMABAD, April 23: Out of the nine National Assembly legislators from Rawalpindi and Islamabad, only one is not a millionaire, according to their statements submitted to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

Malik Shakeel Awan of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lives in a family owned 210 sq yard house and owns a small advertising agency. He does not have a car and has Rs719,535 in the bank.

A close relative of former law minister Dr Babar Awan, he was granted ticket for the National Assembly seat – NA-55 – by the PML-N leadership for his long affiliation with the party.

Malik Ibrar Ahmed, another PML-N MNA from NA-54, has become a millionaire in one year. His current cash holding has reached Rs1.87 million compared to Rs679,671 last year as he has inherited property and a Prado.

But leading the list of MNAs in terms of wealth and property they inherited and managed to enhance is Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. His total assets stand at almost Rs2 billion.

The prime asset owned by Mr Abbasi is Air Blue, valued at Rs1.6 billion. He inherited properties, including a house in F-7 in Islamabad, land and a motel in Murree and two cars worth Rs3 million. In one year, the total wealth of Mr Abbasi increased by Rs375 million mainly due to increase in the market value of his assets.

The statements filed by the MNAs show that leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, owns huge property. And in one year, the list has further expanded.

Mr Khan in his statement submitted last year showed that he had two one-kanal plots in DHA Rawalpindi/Islamabad, two one-kanal plots in SNGPL society, Lahore and a one-kanal plot in the Senate Housing Society. Apart from 42-kanal farmhouse and agriculture land in Chakri, he has a house at Faizabad, Rawalpindi and also owns nine residential flats in Rawalpindi.

However, the additions in the current statement of the assets are; one-kanal plot in Sukh Chain Garden Lahore, one-kanal plot in DHA Islamabad and agricultural land at Chakri measuring 430 kanals along with 198 kanals of Shamlat land.

Mr Khan is one of the few legislators who have a 2010 model Mercedes. He also owns a Pajero and a tractor. However, his cash holding has declined from Rs16.2 million to Rs9.59 million in the current year’s statement.

His wife, too, has property at Pir Sohawa, Islamabad, Chakri and eight-kanal agriculture land at Raiwind Road, Lahore, apart from shares in businesses owned by her parents.

The statement filed by Capt (retired) Mohammad Safdar, who won from NA-52, shows that he has a plot of 500 square yards in E-12, a plot and 160-kanal agriculture land in Mansehra and 215 acres in Rajanpur. A son-in-law of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, he also owns a 4,800 cc BMW, valued at Rs6 million.

Mr Safdar has Rs2 million in cash, but the value of assets filed by him is exactly the same as it was last year. Even the value of 550-gram gold belonging to his wife has not changed from Rs1.03 million in one year.

Hanif Abassi, MNA from NA-56, owns a pharmaceutical company. His total wealth has improved by Rs4.35 million in one year, reaching Rs19.86 million.

Anjum Aqeel Khan, a rich parliamentarian from the capital, NA-48 owns 1,086-kanal land at 16 different locations in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, valued at Rs297 million. He has Rs8.56 in cash.

The statement filed by Mr Aqeel does not depict the appreciation of property price in one year, whereas the Rs6.5 million vehicle owned by him is spelled as ‘Land Carouer,’ and 65-tola gold was received by his wife as ‘Dawary’.

Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry of PML-N from NA-49 has eight inherited properties, besides 300-kanal agriculture land. The value of his property also remains unchanged over the last one year. However, the gold ornaments of his wife has increased by 5 tolas to 30 tolas compared to the statement submitted last year. The cash holdings have improved by Rs250,000 to Rs400,000.

Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, who became MNA from NA-51 Gujar Khan, has no property in his native city but he owns a house in F-8 in Islamabad, a shop in Blue Area, agriculture land in Sargodha and claims to have ancestral land and a house in Sindh, valued at Rs700,000.
