Six die as jeep falls into river near Gilgit

GILGIT, May 26: Six people, including three women and two children, were killed while nine others were injured when the jeep they were traveling in skidded off the road and plunged into a river here on Thursday, administration officials said.

Magistrate Charagh-ud-Din said the ill-fated jeep was heading towards Gilgit from Kargah village, but due to over-speeding the driver lost control over it as a result the vehicle fell into the Karagh River at Nilo Koh point in the suburbs of the Gilgit city.

The official said that those killed included driver, three women and two infants.

He said the local volunteers and government officials retrieved the injured and the dead and shifted them to the DHQ hospital. However, body of a child could not be fished out despite hectic efforts due to violent waves in the river. — Correspondent
