Evolution lost

Located on The Mall, Lahore Museum is one of the most interesting places in Lahore, Pakistan. Founded by the then Prince of Wales Albert Victor, the museum opened its doors to the public in 1894.

From stamps to artifacts of yore, the museum houses an intriguing collection that would please any history aficionado. However, years of neglect is taking its toll on the building, with Sadequain’s mural ‘Evolution of Mankind’ being the biggest victim. The mural, based on Allama Iqbal's verses, evokes the spirit of man to triumph over odds and the search for knowledge.

Last year in June, the mural was removed from the ceiling for repairs and was dumped in a store room. No one knows how soon ‘Evolution …’ would be restored as it loses its beauty with each passing day.  – Text and photos by Hassan Soherwardy
