Nameer reaches U-17 tennis final

KARACHI, June 13: Junior international Nameer Shamsi, who failed to earn a place in the men’s singles main draw, made amends by winning back-to-back matches to reach the juniors’ under-17 singles final of the NBP Open ranking tennis championship at the Modern Club on Monday.

Nameer, making his appearance in the event after a layoff, lost to Abdul Rehman in the final of the men’s singles qualifiers. The latter is also contesting after a break.

Nameer first shocked top seed Talha Zubair Surmawala 6-1, 7-5 in the quarter-final and then went on to eliminate Yayha Gabol 6-3 4-2 (retired) in the under-17 semis to set a date with Hassan Siddiqui who accounted for Saud Shoaib 6-4, 7-5 in the other semi-final.

Top seed Jalil Khan, meanwhile, swept aside Asfand Rouf 6-3, 6-3 to propel into the men’s singles final. He will face the winner of the second semi-final between Omer Shahid and Yasir Khan, in the Tuesday’s final.

Top seed Maheen Dada was the first to storm into the ladies singles final routing Waniya Khan 6-1, 6-3.

The event concludes on Tuesday.

Quarter-final: Omer Shahid bt Faiq Azam 6-2, 6-2.

First semi-final: Jalil Khan bt Asfand Rouf 6-3, 6-3.

Ladies singles:

Quarter-finals: Waniya Khan bt Neha Khan 3-6, 6-3, 10-8; Sara Ahmed bt Hania Naveed 6-0, 6-1; Iman Bari bt Seher Khawaja – walkover; Maheen Dada bt Ariba Azeem – walkover.

First semi-final: Maheen Dada bt Waniya Khan 6-1, 6-3.

Juniors’ under-17 singles:

Quarter-finals: Nameer Shamsi bt Talha Zubair Surmawala 6-1, 7-5; Yahya Gabol bt Fahad Mehmood 6-3, 0-6, 6-4; Saud Shoaib bt Murad Khan 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.

Semi-finals: Nameer Shamsi bt Yahya Gabol 6-3, 4-2 – Yahya retired; Hassan Siddiqui bt Saud Shoaib 6-4, 7-5.

Boys’ and girls’ under-15 singles:

Quarter-final: Ibrahim Iltifat bt Azhar Abdul Qadir 6-2, 6-2.

Boys’ and girls’ under-11 singles:

Semi-finals: Houd Azhar bt Mohammad Dada 8-2; Bilal Imran bt Shahzil Malik 8-7(5).

Boys’ and girls’ under-9 singles:

Semi-finals: Houd Azhar bt Ali Faisal 8-0; Mohammad Dada bt Yahya Ehtesham 8-0.

Men’s doubles:
