GUJRANWALA, June 13: All the six Anti-Narcotics Force officials, including a director and a deputy director, both army majors, who were got arrested by the district and sessions judge in the courtroom after cancellation of their interim bail in a case pertaining to death by torture of a drug peddler, were allegedly released by police.

The District and Session Judge, Muhammad Rasheed Qamar, summoned the city police officer and an investigation officer on Wednesday (tomorrow) after complainant Sughran Bibi, the mother of deceased Zulfikar Ahmad, again moved the court through a plea accusing police of releasing the accused ANF officials despite cancellation of their interim bail.

Sughran Bibi, the window of Ghulam Rasool of Naushara Sansi Road, said in her petition that she had got registered an FIR (No 226/09) on June 12, 2009, against ANF director Maj Syed Kamran Hashmi, Deputy Director Maj Nazir Ahmad and 19 other personnel under sections 302, 365, 148, 149 of the Pakistan Penal Code, while the accused had got an interim bail from the court. However, the accused never bothered to get their bail confirmed and did not appear in the court for two years.

When the six of the accused, including Maj Hashmi and Maj Nazir Ahmad appeared in the sessions court on Saturday last for confirmation of their interim bail, judge Muhammad Rasheed Qamar rejected their plea and got them arrested in the court.

The complainant said the ANF officials, after cancellation of their bail, were taken to Khiali police station from judicial lock-up. The police, she said, asked her to visit the police station along with her two sons, Sajid Husain and Abid Husain, for inquiry. But, she said, when she along with her sons and other witnesses reached the police station, none of the accused were there.

When she asked about their whereabouts, she was told that as the accused included two majors they had been shifted to a ‘safe place’ for their security.

She told the court that the accused were intimidating her and her family members by making threatening calls on her cell phone and pressurising her to withdraw the case.

She said the police released the accused instead of producing them in the court of a magistrate for their physical remand. She requested the court that she should be provided justice and a case should be got registered against the Khiali station house officer and sub-inspector Farzand Ali. She also sought protection of her family members against any harm.

The judge issued the notice to accused and CPO for Wednesday.

Headquarters SP Ali Javed Malik claimed police had kept the arrest of the accused pending as there was no “sound evidence” against them. He said if “sufficient” evidence was recorded against the accused they could be arrested “within no time”.
