Jalil survives scare to claim NBP tennis title

KARACHI: Top seed Jalil Khan survived a scare of being extended to the limits while getting the better of second seed Yasir Khan in the final to win the men’s singles crown in the NBP Open ranking tennis championship at Modern Club on Tuesday.

Jalil won the opening set without much resistance but came under tremendous pressure in the next before winning it in a tie-break. The scores were 6-3, 7-6 (2).

The two brothers are due to fly to Islamabad on Wednesday to attend the national camp which is being held in preparation for the next month’s Davis Cup rubber against South Korea.

Sara Ahmed, who has recently passed ITF officiating chair umpire Level 1 course at Islamabad, halted teenager Maheen Dada’s winning run in three marathon sets to land the ladies singles crown.

The 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 triumph gave Sara her second title of the year the earlier being in the 14th SSB development series in February.

Junior international Nameer Shamsi also made a winning comeback routing Hassan Siddiqui straight 6-2, 6-2 to pick up juniors’ under-17 title.

Ibrahim Iltifat excelled in the under-15 so does Hasan Farooq in under-13 category.

The under-11 and under-9 titles went to Bilal Imran and Houd Azher respectively.

Jalil received a winning purse of Rs10,000 while Yasir was awarded Rs5,000 by secretary sports and youth affairs, Shoaib Siddiqui, who graced the finals. The losing semi-finalists of men’s singles earned Rs2,500 apiece.

A sum of Rs1,500 and Rs1,000 were given to ladies singles winner and runner up while the under-17 champion and losing finalist also got the matching amount.
