Farhan clinches U-17 tennis title

KARACHI, July 18: Unseeded Farhan Mustafa picked up his third title of the year when he defeated Adil Kohari in the final of juniors’ under-17 singles in the Sindh Open ranking tennis championship at Modern Club on Monday.

Farhan fought back after losing the second set to post a 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 victory over unseeded Adil. The top seeds were eliminated earlier.

The winner earned a purse of Rs4,000 while the runner-up received Rs2,000 besides trophies from the chief guest after the final.

Sara Ahmed halted the winning run of Hania Naveed imposing to a crushing 6-0, 6-0 victory to land the ladies singles crown. She fetched a winning prize of Rs6,000 while runner-up took home Rs2,000.

In fact, Sara ended up with a double crown as teaming up with her cousin Urooj Iltifat, the pair defeated sisters Neha and Wania Khan 6-2, 6-3 in the ladies doubles final.

Country’s top player Aqeel Khan had earlier won the men’s singles title by getting the better of Jalil Khan on Saturday.

A sum of Rs41,000 of the total prize money of Rs75,000 were disbursed in the men’s singles event. Apart from men’s singles winner and runner-up purse of Rs17,000 and Rs8,000 respectively, semi-finalists and quarter-finalists were awarded Rs4,000 and Rs2,000 apiece.

Syed Ali Raza, chairman of the National Bank of Pakistan, who graced the occasion, gave away the prizes. Also present at the prize distribution ceremony were chief executive of Pizza Hut, Aqeel Hasan, sponsors of the event, veteran tennis official Khwaja Saeed Hai, Olympian Abdul Waheed Khan and Khalid Rehmani.
