Plea on Jhelum park grab adjourned

LAHORE, July 21: The Lahore High Court (LHC) adjourned on Thursday the hearing of a petition challenging the occupation of a public park measuring 68 kanals and 15 marlas by the Military College, Jhelum.

Assistant Advocate General Shan Gull on behalf of the Punjab government sought time to apprise about the status of the land. Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed adjourned hearing till July 28.

Advocate Sarfraz Ahmad filed the petition on behalf of residents of Sarai Alamgir and submitted that the park situated in the area of Naiabadi, Sarai Alamgir, was owned by the Punjab government. He said people of the vicinity had been using the land as park, playground and to offer funeral prayers since long.

He said the college commandant first built a CNG station on some part of the land and now started erecting boundary wall around the remaining part. The petitioner said the respondent illegally occupied the public park and that property owned by the government could not be used without the due process of law. He prayed to the court to restrain administration of the military college from illegally using the land and order it to withdraw illegal possession. — Staff Reporter
