Psychiatrist passes away

KARACHI, Aug 3: Prof Mussarat Hussain, a noted psychiatrist and former executive director of the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, died on Wednesday morning after a long illness. He was 62.

He is survived by a widow and a son.

The leading psychiatrist in the city was admitted to the Aga Khan University Hospital about a month back for severe chest infection.

A Dow Medical College graduate, Dr Hussain had worked with the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council for some time before joining the JPMC in the mid-70s where he later served as head of the psychiatry department.

He did his postgraduate training in Germany and retired as the JPMC executive director in 2009.

Besides working as a president of the Pakistan Psychiatrists Society, he was a member of the federal government’s defunct mental health authority.

The professor had a number of academic, scientific and research publications to his credit.His son, Mubashir Hussain, said the funeral prayers would be held on Thursday after Zuhr at Jamia Masjid Shafqat, 9-Gizri Lane, Phase 4, DHA.
