Collision claims six lives in Haripur
HARIPUR, Nov 15: Six people were killed in a road accident near Gadwal, some 18km from here on Thursday.
All the victims were travelling by the same vehicle which collided head-on with an oil tanker coming from opposite direction. The cause of the accident was said to be overspeeding by the driver of oil tanker.
Family sources of the victims said members of two families belonging to a local minority councillor Nehmat Maseeh and a manager at TIP, Mohammed Iftikhar, boarded the same van No HR 75 for Rawalpindi from here. When the van reached near village Gadwal a speeding oil tanker No LS 8177 collided head-on with the van.
Five people died on the spot who were identified as Shahid, the van driver, Ms Arsala Bibi, Mrs Nehmat Maseeh, Fatima Bibi and her infant daughter. The sixth victim, Miss Rashida Akbar succumbed to injuries in the Wah hospital.
The accident was so severe that the bodies of the victims were taken out by cutting the body of the vehicle.
BURGLARY:Burglars stole household articles from two more houses in Khalabt Township, an area of Tarbela dam victims, on Wednesday.
Police said unknown thieves entered the house of one Tariq Awan, a councilor from the KTS when the family was away and decamped with cash and valuables, including a colour TV set, two sets of golden ornaments worth rupees of 200,000.
Timber seized: During a campaign against the deforestation, the Haripur Forest Department has seized over 15,000 square feet of high quality timber and recovered millions as compensation from the smugglers during the last year.
This was stated by the district forest officer Haripur, Hashim Ali Khan, in a briefing to Dawn here on Thursday. He said operations had been conducted against the organized gangs of timber smuggling. He added that during the last 12 months the department had seized 15000 ft of fine timber and received compensation of Rs 6.8 million from the smugglers.
