KARACHI, Sept 13: A maximum of 140 millimetres of rainfall was recorded during the latest spell of monsoon showers from Monday evening till Tuesday afternoon almost across the city.

An intermittent drizzle continued into the evening after a brief interval.

The PAF Base Faisal recorded the maximum amount of rainfall — 140mm (more than five-and-a-half inches) — followed by PAF Base Masroor (131mm), according to weather officials, who said more rain was expected on Wednesday.

They said that a seasonal low lay over northwest Balochistan.

The monsoon low was moving across the Sindh-Makran coastline and a fresh westerly wave was likely to affect many parts of the country, including Karachi, they added.

Met officials said that Saddar received 114mm, Landhi 100mm, North Karachi 108mm, Gulshan-i-Hadeed 89mm, Gulistan-i-Jauhar 108mm, Airport old area 100mm and Jinnah Terminal 95mm of rainfall.

Downpour during the prolonged rain spell badly affected visibility and between 9am and 10am it remained the lowest at 500 metres.

The maximum wind speed recorded during the day was 18 kilometres per hour which, according to Met officials, was not high.

The maximum temperature recorded in the city on Tuesday was 26.8 degrees Celsius and the minimum 23.5 degrees Celsius.Humidity — or the measure of the amount of moisture in the air — was recorded at 100 per cent.

For Wednesday, Met officials said there were chances of thunder showers in the city. The officials said that the maximum temperature was expected to range between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority said that despite poor visibility in the morning, there were no weather-related disruptions in operations at the airport, adding that probably no landing or takeoff was scheduled for that particular time.
