Security steps in Chitral termed unwise

CHITRAL, Sept 28: Local leaders of political parties here on Wednesday criticised the administration for creating problems for the public on the pretext of security measures, saying that dismantling of suspension bridges in Chitral for checking militants' movement was an unwise step.

Speaking at a function organised by the Awami National Party, they said that the security forces were blowing up the suspension bridges from Drosh town to Arandu, which had left the population on either side of the river facing tremendous difficulties.

They said that fortified checkposts should be established at the Chitral-Nuristan borders for the security forces so they could effectively check any infiltration from the Afghanistan side.

Those who spoke on the occasion included Muzaffar Jan (ANP), Sher Aziz (JI), Daula Jan (PPP), Eidul Hussain (PML-Q) and Fazal Rahim (PML-N).

The participants also said that the federal government should open the Lowari tunnel for the use of general public as there was no work in progress at the site.
