Disposal of animal waste found wanting in Swabi

SWABI, Nov 9: Exposing the sanitation workers’ inefficiency, the roadside piles of animal offal were a common sight in all the four tehsils of Swabi district during three days of Eidul Azha.

People complained that their repeated requests to the tehsil municipal administrations in Swabi, Chota Lahor, Topi and Razaar for disposal of the slaughtered animals’ waste fell on deaf ears. A resident of Swabi Adda locality told Dawn on Wednesday that TMA had failed to attend to poor sanitation despite being paid taxes in billions by people.

He said the roadside piles of offal were not only an eyesore but also polluted environment and caused diseases.

“It was their (TMA) duty to ensure collection of animal waste but they miserably failed to deliver on it,” he said. Zafar Ali of Maneri Bala complained that they received no instructions from TMA about offal disposal.

An official of Swabi TMA blamed the civic agency’s failure to collect animal waste in the tehsil on staff shortage.

He said TMA struggled to efficiently perform its assigned tasks in the absence of proper staff and machinery. The official said TMA had a tractor trolley and a few employees for cleanliness of Topi city.
