Nasir, Roshna clinch squash titles
KARACHI, Dec 3: Third seed Nasir Iqbal of Wapda became new men’s champion registering upset victory over top seed Farhan Zaman of the PAF in the final of one million rupees fifth DG Rangers Sindh National Squash Championship at Rangers Jahangir Khan squash complex on Saturday.
Nasir, 18, took only 36-minutes to post 11-7, 11-5, 11-1 victory over the seasoned player for the honours.
In yet another upset, qualifier Asim Khan of Punjab, claimed boys’ under-17 title while routing Salman Zaib of the PAF 11-7, 11-5, 11-8. The match lasted 39-minutes.
But it was fourth seed Israr Ahmed who recovered from 1-2 down to inflict defeat on Abbas Shoukat in thrilling five games to annex the boys’ under-15 crown.
The boys’ under-13 and under-11 titles went to Ahsan Ayaz and Ali Karamat of the PAF respectively.
Roshna Mehboob of the ZTBL, who won under-19 crown in the event last year, whipped Wapda’s Saadia Gul in straight games 11-6, 11-5, 11-6 to win the women’s title while Sindh’s Madina Zafar retained girls’ under-15 crown removing Punjab’s Fatima Muneer 11-4, 11-5, 11-6.
The director general, Sindh Rangers, Lt. Gen Mohammad Ijaz Choudhry, who graced the occasion, gave away the prizes. He also watched the men’s final.
Tahir Jamil Khanzada, president of the Sindh Squash Association (SSA), was also present on the occasion.
Nasir received a purse of Rs78,500 while Farhan earned Rs53,500. Roshna fetched Rs37,000 while Saadia took home Rs25,000.
Final results: Men’s: Nasir Iqbal (Wapda) bt Farhan Zaman (PAF) 11-7, 11-5, 11-1.
Boys’ under-17: Asim Khan (Punjab) bt Salman Zaib (PAF) 11-7, 11-5, 11-8.
Boys’ under-15:Israr Ahmed (Punjab) bt Abbas Shoukat (PAF) 11-6, 10-12, 7-11, 11-8, 11-7.
Boys’ under-13: Ahsan Ayaz (PAF) bt Mehran Javed (PAF) 11-8, 11-7, 11-7.
Boys’ under-11: Ali Karamat (PAF) bt Fawad Khalil (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) 9-11, 14-12, 11-1, 11-4.
Women’s: Roshna Mehboob (ZTBL) bt Saadia Gul (Wapda) 11-6, 11-5, 11-6.
Girls’ under-15: Madina Zafar (Sindh) bt Fatima Muneer (Punjab) 11-4, 11-6, 11-1.
