Pakistan to feature in Grand Slam judo

LAHORE, Dec 7: Shah Hussain Shah and Shahzaib will represent Pakistan in the 100kg weight category at the International Judo Federation’s (IJF) Grand Slam 2011 championship to be held in Tokyo, Japan.

The Grand Slam event, also considered as a qualifying competition for the 2012 Olympics, will begin on Dec 9.

Last month, Shah, 18 had also taken part in the World Judo Championship in Cape Town, South Africa in an attempt to get entitlement for the Olympics but he lost to a Russian in the second round and subsequently missed the opportunity to qualify for the London extravaganza.

“The Pakistan Judo Federation is trying to avail every opportunity and Shah Hussain and his partner Shahzaib are our hope since they are already getting training in Japan,” PJF President Col Shujaat Ali Khan said.—Sports Reporter
