Foreign aid worker, driver kidnapped in Khairpur

NAUSHAHRO FEROZE, Jan 23: A foreign aid worker and his Pakistani driver were kidnapped while travelling between Sukkur and Dadu on Sunday evening, police said.

Tom Amimo, a Kenyan citizen working for Care International, an NGO, was going to Dadu from Sukkur by car along with his driver Attaullah Kori when they went missing. Their car was found abandoned in Bhirya town.

SSP Javed Soonharo Jaskani told Dawn that an employee of the Zarai Taraqiati Bank’s Bhirya town branch informed the police that a car was parked near the bank since Sunday night.

The SSP said Mr Zulfiqar, director of the NGO in Sukkur, told them that Mr Amimo left for Dadu at 7:40pm on Sunday. The NGO was working in Sukkur, Larkana and Dadu districts.

The SSP said the vehicle had been handed over to the NGO’s director. He said an inquiry had established that Mr Amimo had been kidnapped in Khairpur district.

The SSP said it was a known practice of kidnappers to leave the vehicle of hostages in other districts.

AGENCIES ADD: Nothing appeared to have been taken from the vehicle, with the foreigner’s laptop and bag containing his personal effects left behind, the SSP said.

Osman Ibrahim, Kenya’s acting High Commissioner to Pakistan, told AFP that the mission was working to confirm whether the foreigner was a Kenyan.
