Dow Club claim basketball title

KARACHI, March 1: Dow Club annexed their maiden title when they overpowered formidable Karachi Basketball Club (KBBC) 69-64 in the Sindh Sports Minister Inter-club basketball tournament final at the Arambagh floodlit court here on Wednesday evening.

The winners, who led 32-27 at half time, were in hot waters on resumption but managed to come out of the deficit to turn the tables on their opponents.

Dow Club, who stunned Neighbourhood Club seniors in the semi-final, won the hearts of crowd with the shooting and swift passing. Ammar, Khalid and Ahsan finished in double figures with 13 and 12 points apiece.

Agha M. Ibrahim’s 18 went in vain as he failed to save his team from defeat. Babar Salim was the other notable scorer with 15 points.

Earlier, Neighbourhood Club had to be content with third place by getting the better of Askari Club 38-29 in the playoff. The winners led 28-17 at half time.

Shakir 11, Asher seven and Raja Zahid five shared the scoring honours for the winning outfit. Taha and Saad scored eight and five points respectively for the losers.

Sindh Sports Minister, Dr Syed Mohammad Ali Shah, who graced the occasion, gave away the prizes.

Dow Club received the winning cash prize of Rs30,000 while the KBBC got runners-up purse of Rs20,000. Neighbourhood Club fetched Rs10,000.
