LAHORE: Students of the Punjab University’s Department of Art and Design painted a wall of the Lady McLagan High School in union council 80 as part of the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) ongoing campaign to create awareness among Lahorites about the new solid waste management services it would be starting in the city in collaboration with Turkish contractors.

LWMC volunteers also explained the new system to the students and faculty of the school to familiarise them with the project aimed at transforming Lahore into a more beautiful and waste-free city.

Later, leaflets containing material to sensitise the citizens about their role for successful implementation of the project were also distributed in residential areas of UC-80.

Meanwhile, a LWMC spokesperson said that under the new system customised waste bags would be supplied to all residents of the targeted areas. Covering 150,000 households, the new system would be implemented in 16 union councils of Gulberg and Data Ganj Bakhsh Town administrations during the first month of its launch.

The UCs would be Anarkali, Gowalmandi, Bibi Pak Daman, Bilal Ganj, Karim Park, Sarai Sultan, Sanda Kalan and Sanda Khurd, Kausarpura, Babu Sabu, Siddiqia Colony, Qila Gujjar Singh, Riwaz Garden, Mozang, Islamia Park, Jinnah Hall, Racecourse, Shadman, Mominpura, Chohan Park and Naseerabad.

The waste bags would be collected from houses, offices and shops on a daily basis. Some 5,000 new and covered containers would be placed in all areas with efficient arrangements for emptying of the same.

Washing and cleaning of roads would be carried out through automatic machinery on a daily basis while that of underpasses, main squares and green belts weekly, said the spokesperson.
