Police lodge inquiry into Ghotki girl issue

SUKKUR, March 19: The IG of  Sindh police, Mushtaq Shah, has constituted a committee to conduct an inquiry into the complaints lodged by the Hindu community of Ghotki about ‘partisan’ role of police in the case of ‘conversion controversy’ of Mis Rinkle Kumari/Faryal Bibi.

Flanked by bearded people belonging to the shrine of Bharchundi, the girl had told a press conference in Karachi last week that she had embraced Islam at the shrine at her free will and married a Muslim youth, who was also present on the occasion.

The girl’s parents and relatives allege that she had been kidnapped and forced to become a Muslim.

The committee is headed by DIG Sukkur Range Ameer Ali Shaikh and includes SSP Khairpur Irfan Baloch, SSP Sukkur Saqib Ismail Memon and ADIG (Crime) Shoukat Abbasi as its members.

The team members on Monday visited the office of SSP Ghotki Pir Mohammad Shah and recorded statements of the concerned police staff. Later, they met Mukhi Nand Lal in Shahi Bazaar, Mirpur Mathelo and recorded statements of Hindu community people and close relatives of the girl.

The team would submit its report to the the DIG by 26th of March.

The two senior police officials said that DSP Mirpur Mathelo Abbas Shah had been placed under suspension while SHO Zulfiqar Mahar was reverted from his post after complaints against the two from Hindu community people.

They said that this action had been taken by higher police authorities for removal of both DSP and SHO Mirpur Mathelo so that they could not influence the inquiry.

They said that during the inquiry nothing had proved against them. They may face disciplinary action if anything came up against them.
