PHC urged to take notice of mistakes in textbooks

PESHAWAR, April 12: Pakistan Peoples’ Party-S (PPP-S) has appealed to the chief justice of the Peshawar High Court to take notice of ‘errors’ in textbooks of class 9th and direct the concerned department to remove the mistakes.

Speaking at a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Thursday the PPP-S member of the central executive committee Ms Meraj Hamayun Khan said the book of Pakistan Studies of class 9 was full of mistakes. “There are language errors in every sentence while West and East Pakistan are glaringly misplaced on the Indo-Pak map on page 86,” she pointed out.

The woman, who also once worked as caretaker education minister in the province, said the condition of education in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had deteriorated to such an extent that it would require an enormous effort on the part of all stakeholders as well as a huge increase in budget to bring it back to a decent level.

The former minister said the rulers were not serious to upgrade the education system, as they had yet to produce a coherent and workable policy to offset the damages caused to the sector by natural disasters and militancy.

She said there was no educational policy devised by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government after the 18th Amendment and devolution of education to the provinces.

Ms Hamayun said those responsible for wasting taxpayers money in producing substandard textbooks should be penalised and made to return the wasted amount.

She suggested that monitoring system should be strengthened at all levels to bring improvement in the education system.

The PPP-S, she said had started work on formation of education policy, adding a questionnaire would be distributed in the communities to seek their suggestions.
