Three in run for PHC bar top slot
PESHAWAR, April 19: Three candidates are in the run for the post of president of Peshawar High Court Bar Association (PHCBA), as its annual elections are set to be held on Saturday (tomorrow).
The lawyers affiliated with Awami National Party, Pakistan People’s Party, Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf and Justice Lawyers Forum have formed an alliance and fielded joint candidates for key posts, while Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Professional Lawyers Group have fieldedseparate candidates.
Advocates Malik Mohammad Ajmal and Mohammad Amin Khattak have been elected unopposed as members of the executive council from Malakand and Kohat, respectively.
According to final list of the candidates released by Khwaja Mohammad Khan, the election commissioner, the candidates for the post of president include Abdul Lateef Afridi, Aminur Rehman and Behlol Khattak. Mr Afridi, a former MNA, is serving as vice-chairman of Pakistan Bar Council and has served as PHCBA president before. Mr Khattak is a former vice-president of the association, while Mr Amin is its outgoing secretary general.
The candidates for the post of vice-president are Zar Mohammad Afridi of Professional Lawyers Group, Babar Khan Yousafzai of Justice Lawyers Forum, Ms Ayesha Malik and Malik Najab Gul.
For the post of secretary general the candidates include Mohim Afridi of PPP, Nek Nawaz Khan of PML-N, Qazi Jawad Ehsanullah, Rifaqatullah and Mohammad Ayaz. For the post of joint secretary, Shakil Khan, Saifur Rehman and Saeedullah Khan are in the run, whereas Salman Fayyaz and Saima Jafri are contesting for the post of secretary library. Adnan Khan and Alam Khan are the two candidates for the post of treasurer.
Those contesting for two posts of executive member from Peshawar include Farman Ali, Khayal Mohammad, Said Bashar, Zahanatullah and Mubasher Hussain. For a single post of executive member from Mardan two candidates, Iftikhar Ali and Mukhtar Ahmad, will contest the election.
