Top players make badminton quarter-finals
LAHORE, April 26: Top players reached men’s singles quarter-finals in the 14th All Pakistan Aamir Hayat Khan Rokhri Badminton Tournament at the New Khan Hall here on Thursday.
Top seeds Wajid Ali, Shabbar Hussain, Waqas Ahmed and Attique Chaudhry all from Wapda along with Shoaib Hafeez of Punjab, reached the men’s quarter-finals.
In the women’s event, Palwasha Bashir, Arfa (KP), Nida Sarwar (Railways), Memoona Ameer (Punjab), Ghazala Siddique (Punjab), Sofia Mughal (Sindh), Sara Mohmand and Bisma Idrees (Punjab) qualified for the last-eight stage.
On Wednesday night, Punjab won the men and women’s team titles.
Punjab Greens defeated Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 3-1 to lift the men’s title.
Haroon Khan of KP overcame Aamir Saeed of Punjab 21-15, 21-19. However, Hafiz Irfan of Punjab defeated Masood of KP 21-12, 21-13. Then Punjab Greens’ Ifan combined with Shoaib to clinch the doubles match against Tahir and Masood 21-12, 11-21, 21-17. In the last doubles, Punjab Greens’ Aamir Saeed and Subhan overpowered Hayatullah and Nadeem 21-17, 21-18 to complete the win.
Punjab blanked Railways 3-0 to claim the women’s team crown.
Punjab’s Memoona earned a 21-11, 21-12 win against Razia. Punjab’s duo of Fariha and Ghazala outclassed Razia and Mahnoor 21-7, 21-5.
Ghazala Siddiqui also carved out a 21-16, 21-10 win against Salma Sharif to record a big win for Punjab women.
