Petition seeks PM’s removal

ISLAMABAD, April 30: The Islamabad High Court office has fixed May 2 for hearing a petition seeking removal of Yousuf Raza Gilani from the office of prime minister and dissolution of the federal cabinet.

The petition filed by Advocate G.M. Chaudhry on Monday has named the prime minister, all federal ministers, ministers of state, advisers and special assistants to the prime minister, speaker of the National Assembly, chief election commissioner, secretaries of the cabinet and law and the attorney general as respondents.

The petitioner says that Mr Gilani is no longer the prime minister after his conviction by the Supreme Court in the contempt case.

Advocate Chaudhry contended that under provisions of paragraph (g) of clause (1) of article 63 of the Constitution, Mr Gilani had been disqualified from being a member of the National Assembly after the conviction and undergoing punishment of imprisonment at the same time.
