Aqeel, Abid in clay court tennis final

ISLAMABAD, May 3: Davis Cupper Mohammad Abid shocked second seed Yasir Khan to reach the final of the ninth Subh-e-Nau National Clay Court Tennis Championship here on Thursday at the PTF Sports Complex.

Abid looked in great form in the first semi-final of men’s singles beating his senior in straight sets. Yasir could not win a single set.

Experienced Aqeel Khan proved his superiority over Imran Shaukat in the second semi-final. Aqeel won the match 6-1 and 6-1.

The men’s singles final will be played on Friday at 4:00pm between Aqeel Khan and Mohammad Abid.

Mohammad Mudassar reached boys’ U-18 final after beating seasoned Kashan-ul-Haq. Mudassar kept his nerves to defeat Kashan 6-4 and 7-6 (5).

He will face Ahmed Babar who has made the final after defeating Raja Shahid in the second semi-final of the category. Both will vie for the title at 10:00am on Friday.

Nofil Kaleem took another step towards boys’ U-14 title as he defeated Asadullah in straight sets in the first semi-final. Nofil smashed quality strokes to prove his brilliant form.

He will face Mohammad Muzammil in the final who continued his brilliant run in the semi-final by defeating Hassan Shaukat.

Boys’ U-14 final will be played at 10:00am on Friday.

Moreover, Aqeel Khan and his younger brother Yasir Khan clinched men’s doubles title after beating experienced Hameed-ul-Haq and Usman Ijaz. Hameed and his partner despite winning the first set could not maintain their winning streak.

Mohammad Mudassar and Ahmed Babar clinched boys’ U-18 doubles title.

Also, Sara Mansoor reached final of ladies singles after beating Meheq Khokhar in straight sets. Sara won the match 6-0, 6-3.

Results:Men’s singles:Semi-finals: Aqeel Khan bt Imran Shaukat 6-1, 6-1; Mohammad Abid bt Yasir Khan 6-3, 7-5.

Boys’ U-18:Semi-finals: Mohammad Mudassar bt Kashan-ul-Haq 6-4, 7-6 (5); Ahmed Babar bt Raja Shahid 6-2, 6-2.

Boys’ U-14:Semi-finals: Nofil Kaleem bt Asif bt Asadullah 6-1, 6-1; Mohammad Muzammil bt Hassan Shaukat 6-3, 6-1.

Men’s doubles:Final: Aqeel Khan/Yasir Khan bt Usman Ijaz/Hameed-ul-Haq 3-6, 6-3 (10-8).

Boys U-18 doubles:Final: Mohammad Mudassar/Ahmed Babar bt Arham Atique/Imad Amir 4-6, 6-3(10-5).

Ladies singles:Final: Sara Mansoor bt Meheq Khokhar 6-0, 6-3.—Agencies
