Dr Khalil Chishti reaches home in Karachi

KARACHI: Prof Dr Muhammad Khalil Chishti reached his home in North Nazimabad on Wednesday night from Islamabad after 20 years' detention in India.

On his arrival, Dr Chishti was warmly welcomed by the faculty of the University of Karachi, including the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Prof Dr Nusrat Jamil. They also displayed a welcome banner at his residence.

It reads “Heartiest welcome to our dear teacher Prof Dr Khalil Chishti- KU alumnus and faculty member, on the auspicious occasion of long awaited home coming after 20 years of detention in India.”

It may be pointed out that Dr Chishti had left for India in 1992 to see his ailing mother where he was implicated in a murder case.

Chairperson of the Department of Microbiology, University of Karachi, Prof Dr Shahana Urooj Kazmi said Prof Chishti studied at the Department of Microbiology, University of Karachi, and did MSc in 1959 in the first batch. Later, she said, Dr. Chishti also served as a teacher at the same department.

Earlier, a meeting of the teachers of the Department of Microbiology, University of karachi, was chaired by Dr Kazmi.

The meeting lauded the role of President Asif Ali Zardari, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan, and others in the release of Dr. Chishti.
