UN agencies seek $169m for new IDPs

UNITED NATIONS, May 18: The United Nations humanitarian agencies need $169 million to help the Internally Displaced Pakistanis living in camps and elsewhere, a UN official said on Friday.

A UN spokesperson told reporters that as of May 15 the UN High Commissioner for Refugees had registered some 232,390 people displaced since January when Pakistan army’s security operations began again.

Besides, the spokesman said, most IDPs preferred to live with host communities in Mohmand, Bajaur, South Waziristan and Orakzai. He warned that the UN humanitarian operation would be at risk without the critical funding being made available immediately.
