House body summons Chaudhry Nisar again

KARACHI, May 21: The privilege committee of the Sindh Assembly on Monday gave “another chance” to Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan to appear before it on May 29 to explain why he had made remarks against Sindhi culture.

Earlier on May 14, the committee had summoned Chaudhry Nisar for today (May 21) through a notice and provincial lawmakers had threatened to besiege the parliament house in Islamabad if he failed to appear before the committee. However, the opposition leader did not appear before the committee on Monday.

Chaudhry Nisar had allegedly ridiculed the celebration of the Sindhi culture day on March 13, terming it as ‘topi drama’ at a press conference. The committee meeting held on Monday was presided over by its chairman Ghulam Mujadid Isran. MPA Imran Zafar Laghari had submitted a privilege motion against Chaudhry Nisar at the assembly secretariat.

During the meeting, Mr Isran said the committee was sending a notice to Chaudhry Nisar to appear before it on May 29. If he failed to make it, the committee would send its final report to the speaker, he added.

Imran Laghari said PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif was holding rallies in Sindh to express his solidarity with the people of the province.

However, the remarks made by his party leader against the culture of Sindh reflected a biased attitude towards Sindh.

Later, Law Minister Ayaz Soomro told reporters if Chaudhry Nisar failed to appear before the committee, he could be sentenced up to six months and legal action could be initiated against him.—PPI
