Toba shocks Asif in ranking snooker
KARACHI: A lowly-ranked Mohammad Asif Toba created a huge upset here on Tuesday when he breezed past his namesake and country’s top cueist Mohammad Asif by 4-2 frames on the second day of the fourth NBP ranking snooker championship at DA Creek Club.
Toba, who represented the country in the IBSF world championship at Bangkok last year, came back into the game from 1-2 down to post 1-77, 57-43, 37-62, 39-24, 66-31, 82-35 victory over the reigning national champion in group A.
Vishan Gir suffered his second defeat in as many days when he went down 3-4 in nail-biting match to Balochistan’s Zahoor Ahmed.
Sindh’s Vishan, who fell to Mohammad Yousuf the other day, fought tooth and nail before giving up in the decisive frame. Zahoor was home 60-14, 47-71, 80-52, 39-66, 62-31, 21-74, 52-35.
Second seed Sultan Mohammad from Sindh also stole the day’s limelight by piling up highest break — 129 — against Ali Raza of Punjab in his 4-1 triumph.
His century break, first of the event, came in the fourth frame of the match which he won 36-61, 93-15, 70-1, 129-8, 73-48.
Though Sultan’s contemporary and province-mate Umair Alam also conjured up a century break — 100 — in the following session against Abdul Rauf Kurd of Balochistan but went in vain. The latter won the fully stretched battle 9-109, 60-49, 85-6, 37-67, 61-29, 20-66, 78-68.
Former celebrity Mohammad Yousuf who is representing Punjab, continued his winning sequence when he humbled Sindh’s Bilawal Agha 71-15, 40-60, 69-7, 64-26, 14-79, 62-34.
