Model village for flood victims

PESHAWAR, May 31: Muslim Aid, a charity organisation, has announced that it will extend support to the flood affected people of Majoka village in Charsadda district and establish a model village.

A programme head of Muslim Aid, Saqib Farooq here on Thursday told media persons that his organisation with the support of High Speak and Amkor, non-governmental organisations, had initiated construction work on the village for flood affected people some two year back.

Similarly, he said that more than 50 houses would be constructed in the village, which would be completed within a month. He further said that all kinds of household facilities would be made available in the houses. — Bureau Report

Raise in taxes

KARAK, May 31: Drivers of local transport organised a protest demonstration here on Thursday to protest against the proposed raise in taxes of tehsil municipal administration (TMA).

The transport union district president Mohammad Sadiq Khattak informed media persons at Jail Chowk here on Thursday that the transporters would not drive their vehicles into the general bus stand and stay in Jail Chowk area as a mark of protest.

He said that TMA Karak was charging four taxes from the transporters on daily basis and added that these would be increased from the new financial year.

The transport workers said that they would observe complete wheel-jam strike if the TMA went ahead with its plan to increase taxes. — Correspondent

No tobacco day

PESHAWAR, May 31: On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day, a seminar was held at Rehman Medical College in Peshawar on Thursday.

The seminar was largely attended by doctors and nursing staff wherein health experts spoke about the harmful effects of tobacco use and stressed the need that people should avoid it.

The session which was chaired by noted physician and dean of RMC, Dr Sher Mohammad Khan.

Dr Sher Khan in his speech said that smoking harmed nearly every organ of the body causing many diseases and affecting general health of the smoker. He said cigarettes contained over 4,000 toxic chemicals like ammonia, arsenic, acetone, methanol, hydrogen cyanide etc, 50 of which were known to cause cancer. — Bureau Report

Man dies on road

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, May 31: A man was killed and four others were injured in two road accidents here on Thursday.

Police said that Rashid was killed and Salim Bhatti, Saleem and Khalil were injured when a pick-up van hit a motorcycle rickshaw on Multan Road. The injured were shifted to hospital. The police have registered a case.

In another accident, Naeem, resident of Dinpur, was injured when his motorcycle rammed into a car in the limits of Cantt police station.

The injured was taken to a nearby hospital.

Meanwhile, the people of Bagwani area of Paharpur Tehsil held two men allegedly involved in stealing power transformers and handed them over to the police here on Thursday. — Correspondent

Kalash people laud police

CHITRAL, May 31: The Kalash elders from Bubmburate, Birir and Rumbur valleys have appreciated the role of Chitral police in maintaining peace in the valleys during the recently concluded Chilim Jusht festival.

Addressing a press conference here the other day, Saifullah Jan Kalash, Wazir Kalash, Malik Shai and others emphatically denied the charge levelled by former tehsil nazim of Mastuj, Sikandarul Mulk that the local police transgressed their powers and meddled in the internal affairs of the community.

They criticised Sikandarul Mulk for his attempt to pit the local police and Kalash community with each other just to achieve his ulterior motives. They said Kalash people were capable of managing their own affairs and they did not need any advocacy from outside. — Correspondent

Progress on projects reviewed

MARDAN, May 31: A meeting on Thursday reviewed progress on the ongoing projects of the Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan, Agriculture University Ameer Mohammad Khan Campus and Bacha Khan Medical College located in the Bacha Khan Greater Education Complex.

The meeting was presided over by Commissioner Mohammad Adil Khan and was attended by Vice-Chancellor Abdul Wali Khan University Dr Ihsan Ali, Project Director and Principal of Bacha Khan Medical College Prof Dr Zia-ul-Islam, and others.

The meeting said that the provision of drainage system, electricity and gas facilities to all the three educational institutions of Bacha Khan Greater Complex should be completed through mutual consultations as per the master plan. — Correspondent

Prize distribution ceremony

PESHAWAR, May 31: The annual prize distribution ceremony of University Public School was held here on Thursday in which students with distinction in various classes were awarded medals and certificates by chief guest Malik Azmat Khan, the federal minister for provincial coordination and a former student of UPS.

Addressing the ceremony the chief guest said that continuous struggle and hard work was key to success and only those nations of the world had prospered over the years who had adopted this fact, said a press release issued by the University of Peshawar parent institution of UPS.

The chief guest said that the illiterate and unaware people were more prone to falling in wrong hands or the non-state actors. If we would have had the desired percentage of educated youth in our country, the situation would have been totally different, he said. — Bureau Report

ABBOTTABAD, May 31: Mir Mohammad Awan was elected as president of Abbottabad Press Club, while Shahid Chaudhry was elected president of Abbottabad Union of Journalists here on Thursday, said a press release.

The other new office-bearers of the press club included senior vice-president Sardar Naveed Ahmed, vice-president Ashfaq Ahmed, general secretary Sardar Naveed Alam, joint secretary Adil Abbasi, finance secretary Saifur Rehman and assistant secretary Wasih Khan.
