Concern over threats to Asma

HYDERABAD, June 5: Representatives of human rights organisations, civil society and non-governmental organisations have strongly criticised issuance of life threats to prominent rights activist Asma Jahangir and termed it a conspiracy against the democratic country.

In a joint statement issued here on Tuesday, coordinator of the Sindh chapter of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan Asho Thama, president of Sindh Hari Porihat Council Mohammad Punhal Sariyo, regional head of the HRCP Mustafa Baloch, Labour Party leader Bakhshal Thalho and regional head of South Asian Partnership Shahnaz Shaheen expressed their serious concern over information from a responsible and highly-credible source that there was a threat to the life of one of the most influential leaders of the lawyers fraternity, Asma Jahangir.

They said the conspirators should not underestimate the consequences of any harm caused to the life of Asma Jahangir. This was not a conspiracy against an individual but also a plot against Pakistan’s future as a democratic state, they said. They urged the government to take notice of the threats hurled at Asma Jahangir.—APP
