Eight killed in Kohat road crash

KOHAT, June 13: At least eight persons, including three children and a woman, were killed and five others received injuries when a truck collided with a passenger coach near Ilays Chowk on Indus Highway here on Wednesday.

The ill-fated coach was going from Rawalpindi to Karak when it collided with the truck. The residents of the area rushed to the site after the accident and pulled out the injured and dead from the coach.

The victims, who belonged to Sabirabad area of Karak, were identified as Imran, driver of the coach, Saira Bibi, Abdul Mohammad, Nek Nawaz, Ayaz Mohammad, Eman Bibi, Usama and Kanwal Bibi.

Meanwhile, a man detained in a murder case was killed along with his brother while two policemen were injured when rival group opened firing on them in Muhammadzai village here on Wednesday.

Police told Dawn that Riyat Khan was arrested with the help of a sniffer dog in the murder case of Maulana Maroof, who was killed on Tuesday night.

The accused was being taken to police station when Rauf, a brother of Maulana Maroof, opened firing on them. As a result, Riyat Khan and his brother Azmat were killed while Inspector Ammal Khan and head constable Rauf Khan were injured.

Also, a constable was injured when unidentified motorcyclists hurled a hand grenade at a police party in Gandiali area on Rawalpindi Road on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, militants blew up a primary school for boys in Shahpur area on the outskirts of Kohat in the small hours of Wednesday.

Police said that terrorists planted eight kilograms of explosives at the school building that went off at around 3.30am. As a result, a classroom collapsed while the boundary wall of the school was partially damaged.
