Govt urged to end child labour

MUZAFFARABAD, Dec 20: An NGO, working for human rights, environmental protection and freedom of press, has urged the AJK government to ensure enforcement of the laws barring child labour.

Khwaja Zafar Iqbal, coordinator of the Press for Peace (PFP) on Thursday said that though the laws were existing, their proper implementation by the relevant agencies in Azad Kashmir was missing.

He said that government departments should play their role in preventing child labour, either forced or at will.

Mr Iqbal said PFP had held programmes to mark the child labour free week, which would end on Dec 23, while some more events were in the pipeline.

The PFP members, he said, were focussing on street gatherings instead of holding functions in hotels. “Our members would particularly reach the refugees and the displaced people with a message that they should give notebooks and pens to their children instead of working tools,” he said.
