ANP leader survives grenade attack in Karachi

KARACHI: Awami National Party (ANP) leader Bashir Jan late on Thursday survived an apparent targeted grenade attack on his vehicle in Frontier Colony. However, four others sustained injuries, DawnNews reported.

Jan along with his guard remained unharmed in the attack. A heavy contingent of police and rangers cordoned off the area as fire exchanges between the guard and assailants were reported as well.

Speaking to DawnNews immediately after the attack, chief of ANP’s Sindh chapter, Shahi Syed severally condemned the incident demanding immediate action against the miscreants.

Declaring the attack as a cowardly act, Syed also appealed the party workers to remain unruffled and calm.

Two workers of the ANP, a bystander and a senior party member were killed apparently in a targeted attack outside the latter’s house in the same locality earlier during the week.

The Monday shootings within the remit of the Pirabad police station sowed seeds of fear in the neighbourhood leading to markets closure in Frontier Colony, Banaras Chowk and Mominabad areas of Orangi Town amid reports of intermittent gunfire.

Threatening the administration of dire consequences, Shahi Syed said that Karachi was not a “jungle” and demanded a military operation to eradicate the menace of violence from the metropolis.

He urged all political parties to work together to maintain peace in the city.

The miscreants are using rocket launchers and grenades to spread chaos in Karachi, he said, adding action should be taken against criminal elements without any discrimination.
