SUP asking for support against LG law
KARACHI, Sept 10: Sindh United Party chief Syed Jalal Mehmood Shah on Monday met Pakistan Muslim League-Functional president Pir Pagara to muster support for a strike call given for Sept 13 by the Sindh Bachayo Committee in protest against the Sindh People’s Local Government Ordinance 2012.
After the meeting, which took place at the Raja House in the DHA, the SUP chief, who is also the convener of the committee, told Dawn that he had drawn attention of the PML-F chief towards three main points in the ordinance.
“The points not only violate the constitution but they also undermine provincial authority,” he said, adding that under the SPLGO there was a provision to do favour to some particular parties as well.
“The government can exercise its authority to grant magisterial powers, but this power cannot be allowed to be exercised by any political party,” he said.
He said that he received a copy of the SPLGO only a few hours before leaving his house for the meeting and he had had only a cursory look at the ordinance and could only pick up a few points hurriedly which he considered were in violation of the constitution and provincial autonomy.
Mr Shah said that the PML-F chief assured him of full support to get the ordinance repealed as his party also did not approve the SPLGO.
They were of the view that instead of imposing the local government system through an ordinance, it ought to be tabled in the assembly where after a debate if the assembly approved it, then they would have had no objection to it, he said.
He said that he was accompanied by SUP senior vice president Syed Ghulam Shah and Sindh PML-F chapter secretary general Imtiaz Ahmad Sheikh was also present in the meeting.
