Dawn Spelling Bee contest held in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD, Sept 15: Students actively participated in the 8th Dawn in Education Spelling Bee Competition (Sindh round) organised by the Dawn Media Group in partnership with the US Embassy Islamabad at the Mumtaz Mirza auditorium in the Sindh Museum on Saturday.

The Sindh round of the championship was supported by the IBA Sukkur and judged by Oxford University Press (OUP). DawnNews and CityFM are media partners of the event.

The contestants surprised the audience and judges with their quick answers.

Clad in clean and crisp uniforms of their respective schools and shining black leather shoes, students — as well as their teachers — enjoyed various activities including tableaux performed during interludes.

Children were engaged in simple answer-question segments.

A total of 360 children from 40 schools of Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Tando Mohammad Khan, Sanghar, Petaro, Talhar, Shahdadpur, Rashidabad and Nawabshah participated in the competition which started at 8.30am and concluded at 6.00pm.

The contestants were placed in three age groups of 9-11 years, 12-14 and 15-17 years. The winners were awarded certificates.

The competition among students of upper Sindh, including Jacobabad, Khairpur, Naushahro Feroze and Sukkur, would be held at the IBA Sukkur auditorium on Sept 18.

The winners of Sindh round would take part in the national round to be held in Karachi on Oct 3.—Staff Correspondent
