Mingora bar elects office-bearers

MINGORA, Sept 29: The Peshawar High Court’s Mingora Bench (Darul Qaza) Bar Association on Saturday elected Abdul Haleem as its president and Abdul Wadood as its general secretary.

Jamaat-i-Islami supported Mr Haleem, while Mr Wadood belonged to Pakistan People’s Party-Sherpao.

The polling began at 8:30am and continued until 3:00pm at Darul Qaza building in Fizagat, Mingora.

Three lawyers’ panels had fielded candidates for the bar offices. A total of 341 lawyers cast vote.

According to results, Mr Haleem secured 164 votes to defeat Iftikhar Ahmad of PML and independent candidate Mohammad Saeed, who bagged 34 and 40 votes respectively.

Fida Mohammad Khan backed by PPP was elected as the bar’s vice president by getting 167 votes. The runner-up, Haq Nawaz of PML-N, bagged 160 votes.

Abdul Wadood of PPP-Sherpao got 118 votes to become the bar’s general secretary.

He was followed by ANP’s Qazi Hidayatullah with 115 votes and Saeed Khan with 101 votes.

Mohammad Nisar was elected joint secretary, Ziarat Gul finance secretary and Sanullah library secretary unopposed. Waliullah from Buner, Mohammad Anwar from Swat, Zaiul Haq from Lower Dir, Jehangir Shah from Upper Dir and Azizi Ahmad from Malakand’s protected area have already been elected members of the bar’s executive committee unopposed.
