Introduction of metric system

SYDNEY (By Airmail): Pakistan’s plans to introduce the metric system were discussed at the Fifth Commonwealth Standards Conference held in Australia from Oct 8 to 17. Representing Pakistan at the conference was Dr M.R. Chowdhury, Director of the Pakistan Standards Institution.

Other Commonwealth countries represented at the conference were Australia, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, Rhodesia and Nyasaland, and India. Delegates from South Africa also attended.

Dr Chowdhury said that next year Pakistan would begin preparatory work for the introduction of metric weights and measures.

“Our Institute will be virtually involved in the planning of the change-over to the metric system, so the conference is a most useful opportunity to exchange ideas with Commonwealth countries considering the same step.”
