Resolution against Kalabagh dam in Sindh Assembly

KARACHI: Ruling Pakistan People Party (PPP) lawmakers on Thursday tabled a resolution in the Sindh Assembly against the construction of the controversial Kalabagh Dam project, DawnNews reported.

The house was filled with shouts and slogans as PPP MPA Imran Zafar Laghari presented the resolution condemning the construction of the dam.

“The house condemns the construction of the controversial Kalabagh Dam and recommends federal government to abandon this project once for all,” said the resolution.

Thursday’s session of the Sindh Assembly was chaired by Speaker Nisar Khuhro.

The decades-old Kalabagh Dam project resurfaced recently when the Lahore High Court ordered the federal government to build the Kalabagh Dam in accordance with the decisions of the Council of Common Interests (CCI).

While the dam’s construction has been vociferiously supported by Punjab over the decades, it has met with fierce opposition from smaller provinces, especially Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

It is believed in both provinces that the project would deprive them of their fair share of water from the Indus River. Politicians of all shades in Sindh and the outspoken opponents of the project in Khyber Pakhtunkhawa have vowed to oppose the project by all means.

Earlier on Tuesday, Sindh information minister Sharjeel Memon had informed Dawn that the government was planning to move a resolution against the Kalabagh dam project during today’s session.

He said the issue had been dead for a long time, but since it has reemerged, the party had decided to once again get a resolution passed by the assembly to reject the plan.
