Pakistan allows sugar exports of 500,000 tonnes

ISLAMABAD/MUMBAI: Pakistan has allowed sugar exports of 500,000 tonnes without putting any quantitative restriction on mills, a government statement said on Tuesday, as the country aims to trim inventory and generate revenue for cash-strapped mills.

Exporters need to ship the quantity within 90 days after registering exports, the statement said.

Pakistan is likely to produce 5 million tonnes sugar in 2012/13 year started on Oct 1 against local demand of around 4.3 million tonnes.
