KARACHI, Dec 19: The Asian Development Bank-funded 56.4 megawatt wind power project in Jhumpir will start electricity generation from next month as an implementing company has completed all necessary work in this connection, journalists have been told during a visit to the project site.

This is in addition to the project of the Fauji Fertiliser Company Energy Limited (FFCEL), which is likely to become operational next week and add about 50 megawatts of electricity to the national electricity transmission system.

In total more than 106 megawatts of electricity will be added to the national power transmission system the next month when the FFCEL and the ADB-funded Jhumpir wind energy projects will become operational.

The ADB is financing the $143 million Jhumpir windmill project spread on 1,148 acres in Jhumpir in Thatta and being executed by Zorlu Energy Pakistan, the local subsidiary of a Turkish company.

“We have completed all the work on the project and are waiting for the approval to start operation next month,” country manager of Zorlu Energy Mumtaz Hassan told the journalists at the project site.

“As many as 34 wind turbines have been built on the wind farm with power generation capacity of 1.8 megawatts each turbine,” he said.

“One formality for launching the power generation operation is the approval from the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC),” he added.

“The other formality is the inspection by independent engineers, who are likely to visit the site next week,” he said.

“On our side we have completed the testing and next week independent engineers will be here to inspect the project and issue a certificate,” he said.—APP
