Karachi partially shut on ASWJ day of mourning; four injured

KARACHI: Four people were injured in different parts of Karachi on Wednesday which had been announced as a day of mourning by the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat over an attack on a central leader of the group, DawnNews reported.

Those injured today were wounded in incidents of aerial firing and ransacking of public and private properties in Ghas Mandi, Machar Colony and other areas of the city.

The public was experiencing difficulty in commuting due to scarcity in public transport and closure of CNG stations and petrol pumps. Transporters’ organisations in the city had announced on Tuesday that they would keep their vehicles off the road on Wednesday

Moreover, enraged mobs had suspended traffic in the areas of Shershah, Banaras, Lasbela, Gulshan-i-Iqbal and Sultanabad, spreading fear and panic in the localities.

Furthermore, several trade centres across Karachi were also closed on account of the call for observing Wednesday as a day of mourning.

Earlier on Tuesday, violence had erupted in different parts of the city after an attack on Maulana Aurangzeb Farooqui, a central leader of the ASWJ, and the killing of four men associated with the group.

Farooqui had sustained a gunshot wound in the thigh in the attack on his motorcade in Gulshan-i-Iqbal that left four policemen, a private guard and a driver dead.
