Cannot confirm Mullah Nazir’s death: FO

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Foreign Office has said that it cannot verify the death of Taliban warlord Mullah Nazir in a US drone strike in the South Waziristan tribal region, DawnNews reported.

However, the Foreign Office spokesman said that the issue of drone attacks has been raised at a high level with the United States.

In his weekly briefing to the press, spokesman Moazzam Ali Khan reiterated the stance that Pakistan condemned US drone attacks on its soil. He added that the matter was raised in talks between the senior leadership of both countries.

Terming Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar’s visit to Saudi Arabia as successful, Khan said that the relations between the two countries were exemplary.

Answering a question about Iran’s nuclear installations, the spokesman said that the matter could be resolved in a peaceful manner. Khan said that the issue could not be solved with the imposition of sanctions.

Speaking about a conference of ulema (clerics) being planned in Afghanistan, the spokesman said that Pakistan was in contact with Afghanistan over dates for the conference.

It was earlier reported that the ulema conference is being planned for last week of January, where the religious leadership would urge the militants to renounce violence and join peace efforts.

Khan also said that President Asif Ali Zardari will not be attending the third Pakistan-India cricket match, adding that there were no plans of such a visit to India.
